Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos Wedding: A Planner’s Take

Liz and Aaron's Grand Fiesta Americana Wedding

One of the first conversations I have with my couples when we start looking at hotels is about the kind of experience they want for their guests.

Do they prefer a European Plan resort, where food and beverages are not included, or does an all-inclusive make more sense for their group?

When they tell me they prefer an all-inclusive, Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos is usually one of the first venues I suggest.

Over the years, I have planned many weddings at this venue and worked with many different combinations of its event spaces. I like the hospitality, the food, the location, the different options we have for a wedding and, especially, the Imperial Suite.

What I Like About Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos

Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos sits within Cabo del Sol, along the Los Cabos Tourist Corridor, overlooking the Sea of Cortez and just a short drive from Cabo San Lucas.

I like the location because you are away from the busier areas of Cabo, but still close enough if your guests want to go into town, spend a day on a boat, or explore a little more of Los Cabos.

I have worked at Grand Fiesta Americana for many years, and I have seen the hotel evolve. Something that has always stood out to me is the hospitality.

The staff is friendly; they are used to groups and weddings, and they understand what it takes to produce an event. As a wedding planner, I really appreciate that.

There is also a lot for guests to enjoy during their stay, with different restaurants, pools, and spaces throughout the resort. For a Cabo destination wedding, I think this works especially well because everyone can enjoy their vacation at their own pace while still being together for the wedding weekend.

Over the years, I have planned about 10 weddings at this property, and we have created different flows depending on what each couple wanted for their celebration. For Paulette & Dylan, we held the ceremony and cocktail hour at Whale’s Terrace, then moved to the Imperial Suite for the reception. For Brianna & Alec, we held the ceremony and cocktail hour on the beach, then moved to the Imperial Suite for the reception. For Liz & Aaron, we held the ceremony and reception at Whale’s Terrace, with cocktail hour at Peninsula Garden. These are just a few examples of how differently the spaces can be used depending on the wedding.

The Imperial Suite: A Private Villa Within the Resort

If you ask me which space I personally prefer for weddings at Grand Fiesta Americana, my answer is easy: the Imperial Suite.

The Imperial Suite is a private villa within the resort. It sits in a more secluded area of the property, away from the main hotel spaces, which gives the celebration a wonderful level of privacy.

For the reception, we can use the garden for dinner and the terrace for dancing, or vice versa, depending on the design and flow we want to create. We have produced weddings here for around 100 guests, and I like having the flexibility to use these two areas in different ways.

The couple can also stay in the Imperial Suite, so it becomes part of their stay and their wedding weekend, not simply the reception venue.

One important thing to know is that to host an event at the Imperial Suite, the villa needs to be reserved for a minimum of two nights. If you decide to have your ceremony or another part of the wedding at the beach or Whale’s Terrace, those spaces have their own venue fees.

If you love the idea of a villa wedding but would like to explore other options in Los Cabos, I can also recommend other properties depending on the experience, location, and level of privacy you are looking for. Contact us to discuss other options.

Choosing the Right Space for Your Wedding

The Imperial Suite is not the only option for a wedding at Grand Fiesta Americana. Depending on your guest count, your priorities, your budget, or simply the type of setting you prefer, there are other spaces throughout the resort.

The beach is a beautiful option for couples who want the Sea of Cortez as the backdrop for their ceremony. For beach ceremonies, timing is especially important. I like to plan them later in the afternoon, when the sun is softer, and we can take advantage of the beautiful light leading into sunset. The exact ceremony time will depend on the time of year, since sunset changes throughout the season.

Whale’s Terrace gives you an outdoor setting close to the ocean without having to be directly on the sand. It can work for ceremonies, cocktails, or receptions, and we have done dinners there for around 120 guests, depending on the layout.

For larger celebrations, Fairway Terrace offers considerably more space. It is located near the convention area and away from the regular flow of hotel guests. Depending on the setup, it can accommodate more than 200 guests.

We can also combine these spaces throughout the celebration. The right choice depends on the number of guests, the atmosphere you want, and how we want the wedding to flow from one moment to the next.

The Culinary Experience

Food is something I naturally pay a lot of attention to when planning weddings.

And somehow, many of the couples I work with are the same. They love to travel, discover amazing culinary experiences, and connect with a destination through its food. So when it comes to their wedding, the quality of the food really matters to them.

Over the years, I have seen a big evolution in gastronomy at Grand Fiesta Americana, and today the quality really stands out.

For cocktail hour, they can serve hors d’oeuvres, install small food stations, or a combination of both. For dinner, you can choose between plated menus, buffets, and stations. In many of our weddings, I personally prefer plated service.

Dessert can also be plated or served as a station, and couples can choose to include a wedding cake.

For later in the evening, late-night food stations are another fun option. Depending on the menu available for the event, we can incorporate something more casual for guests to enjoy after dancing, such as tacos, churros, or other late-night bites. It is a nice way to bring another food experience into the wedding rather than having dinner be the last culinary moment of the night.

One thing that is important to know is that private wedding food and beverage is priced separately from your guests’ all-inclusive stay.

In my experience, event food and beverage at an all-inclusive can sometimes be a little more favorable than at a comparable European Plan resort, but I always recommend looking at the complete proposal because every hotel structures its fees and inclusions differently.

Making the Most of the Wedding Weekend

One of the advantages of an all-inclusive is that your guests don’t need you to plan every hour of their stay.

They have restaurants, pools, and different places to spend time during the day, and people naturally start finding each other. They meet at breakfast, at the pool, or over lunch, and guests who didn’t know one another before the trip start to connect.

Even though you can have several events at the resort, I also like taking guests outside the hotel at least once if the schedule and budget allow. A boat day, for example, is one of my favorite options.

You get the convenience of having everyone at the resort while still allowing your guests to experience more of Los Cabos.

A Few Things That Are Good to Know

Depending on the number of guests arriving on the same day and hotel availability, Grand Fiesta Americana may be able to arrange a group check-in.

It is not guaranteed because it depends on hotel operations and arrivals for that day, but it is something we follow up on and coordinate as the wedding approaches.

Another important detail is the curfew. Wedding events at Grand Fiesta Americana end at 11:00 p.m.

Guests who want to continue the evening can move to Black Lemon, the resort’s nightclub, which is typically open until 1:00 a.m., depending on the season and hotel operations.

I like having that option because guests who still want to keep the night going can continue without having to leave the resort.

The hotel also has indoor ballrooms available as a weather backup for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception.

A Hotel That Understands Weddings

One thing I really appreciate about Grand Fiesta Americana is that they host only one wedding per day.

Your wedding is the wedding of the day, and I think that makes a difference. The couple and their celebration have the attention of the wedding team without another wedding happening somewhere else on the property at the same time.

They are also very comfortable working with wedding planners and outside vendors, which gives us a lot of creative freedom.

When a couple hires us to plan their Grand Fiesta Americana wedding, we can leave out the hotel’s wedding packages and bring our own team of vendors. This gives us the freedom to build the celebration around the couple, their style, and vision. We personalize the florals, entertainment, photography, production, and overall design rather than starting from a predetermined package.

The wedding packages offered by the hotel are available for couples who book their wedding directly with Grand Fiesta Americana. When we are involved from the beginning, we follow a different planning process, working together with the hotel while bringing in the vendor team selected specifically for our clients.
